FAQS

We know choosing the right CDL training program comes with a lot of questions. Below are answers to the most common topics students ask about when deciding whether HMTI is the best fit for their goals.

What is truck driving school?

Truck driving school is an accelerated training program that teaches students how to safely operate and drive a semi‑truck. At HMTI, you’ll earn your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) and receive hands‑on instruction to prepare for your Oklahoma CDL exam. Our training combines classroom learning, yard skills, and real‑world driving.

How long is the CDL training program?

HMTI’s CDL training program typically takes four to five weeks to complete. The exact length depends on attendance, weather, testing availability, and how quickly each student masters required skills. Our goal is to ensure every student is fully prepared — not rushed — before taking their CDL exam.

What are the class hours?

Classes run on a full‑time schedule, Monday through Friday. Students spend time in the classroom, on the training yard, and behind the wheel throughout the week. This consistent schedule helps students stay focused, build confidence, and complete the program as efficiently as possible.

Do I need a CDL permit before starting training?

No. Most of our students begin training with no prior truck driving experience. We help you prepare for and obtain your CLP as part of the enrollment process.

Do you help with the CLP test?

Yes. HMTI provides study materials, guidance, and support to help you prepare for your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) exam. Most students begin training without any prior experience, and we walk you through each step — from studying to testing — so you feel confident before you take the written exam.

How much does truck driving school cost?

Tuition varies depending on the program you choose. HMTI also offers tuition reimbursement, funding options, and financial assistance through various partners. We help you explore every option available.

Is funding available through Workforce or Tribal programs?

Yes. Many students qualify for funding through Workforce offices, Tribal programs, and other community partners. HMTI works closely with these organizations to help students access available financial assistance. Our team can guide you through the process and connect you with the right resources.

Can an 18-year-old get their CDL?

Yes. However, drivers under 21 are restricted to in‑state (intrastate) driving only. Once you turn 21, you may drive across state lines.

Does HMTI accept felons?

All applicants are considered. Eligibility may depend on employer requirements, insurance restrictions, and the nature of past convictions.

Does HMTI drug test?

Yes. All prospective students must pass a DOT‑approved pre‑employment drug test before operating a commercial motor vehicle (CMV). Students may also be subject to random testing and post‑accident testing during training.

What is the difference between Class A CDL and Class B CDL?

A Class A CDL prepares you for entry‑level jobs operating tractor‑trailers and allows you to drive over‑the‑road (OTR), regional, or local routes. A Class B CDL allows you to operate a single vehicle over 26,000 lbs., such as dump trucks, tow trucks, delivery trucks, or utility trucks.

What if I have a Class B CDL and want to upgrade to Class A?

You must complete the full Class A CDL course. Federal ELDT (Entry‑Level Driver Training) regulations require full training for all Class A applicants.

How do I enroll and when can I start class?

Start by submitting the Pre‑Admission Screening & Medical Questionnaire. Within a few days, our team will contact you to select your start date. Your spot is secured once you are approved for funding or pay for the class. Classes begin every Monday.

Can you help me find a job after graduation?

Yes. HMTI provides job placement assistance for students and graduates in good standing. We partner with multiple companies actively hiring CDL drivers and can help with resumes, applications, and interview preparation.

I still have questions.
